Mentor – Every instance of addiction is unique but dealing with an addiction is what binds the recovery community together. Your recovery coach will themselves have lived experience in dealing with addiction and coming out of it on the other side.
Truth Teller – One of the key principles behind successful recovery from addiction is being truthful to others and yourself. Your recovery coach will always be truthful with you, good and bad, and will work with you honestly to overcome any obstacles that might come along.
Problem Solver – Recovery is rarely linear. There will be ups and downs, good days and bad days, strokes of luck and setbacks which without the right support could derail recovery. Your coach will work through these problems with you using a logical, resource-based approach, helping to cover any gaps there may be in your armour. A problem shared is a problem halved.
Ally – A recovery coach is always on your side, cheering you on throughout your recovery. Your coach is emotionally invested in your recovery and will always help you to achieve the goals you set together.
Confidante – Whatever it is that may be bothering you, you can tell your coach. Coaches are trained in helping with a wide range of personal issues and are ethically bound to confidentiality.
Advocate – Are you anxious, scared or nervous of entering recovery? Do you want someone to represent you and make anonymous enquiries on your behalf? You might want a chaperone to a recovery meeting. No matter how small the request, your coach is there to represent for you and make sure that your recovery needs are met.
Resource Broker – Your coach will be well versed in the language of recovery and intimately familiar with recovery resources in your area. Whatever pathway of recovery you decide to pursue, your coach can talk you through them and make the relevant enquiries and arrangements to make sure you get off to the best start possible. They will be with you through every stage of your recovery to make sure you have the resources you need, when you need them.
Motivator – Perhaps most importantly, a recovery coach is a personal cheerleader and motivator. It is one thing deciding to make a change, it is another thing implementing change. Recovery is never a piece of cake, but it can be done with the right motivation and support! Your recovery coach will be there as long as you need them to be, helping you navigate the complex twists and turns of a major life change!
